I think I have birds to thank for my photographer's eye. Watching them so avidly as a child may have trained me to isolate form and color, especially in places often overlooked. The leap from binoculars to a Brownie Hawkeye was simple and rewarding. From a ten-year-old's point of view, loving birds kept friends at bay; however, having a camera in hand attracted them. That outward change let me in socially without taking away the private, beautiful world of a lens. A camera of one sort or another has never left my side since. Happy with where I've traveled, I do sometimes wonder what path might have unfurled had I focused my lenses on birds. To this day what I see in my viewfinder feels like a place apart and invariably refreshing. It's still where I go to play, to be amazed and delighted by whatever or whoever wanders into the frame. Believing that the extraordinary resides in the ordinary is what guides my photography. More often than not, I'm drawn to intimate landscapes rather than grand vistas. But no matter what the subject matter, my hope always is to express the sheer beauty and magic of the moment as I see it. Email: |
